Kundapur, Jan 22: The situation in Gangolli town which observed bandh on Wednesday January 21 after miscreants set fire to the shop belonging to Venkatesh Shenoy is under control, without any major incidents being reported since Wednesday evening.
The section 144 which was imposed on January 21 will continue till January 25 midnight in Gangolli, Trasi and Gujjadi areas.
A pro-Hindu organization had called for the bandh in protest of the fire incident which had damaged 2 cars, a transport vehicle and other goods in the shop. The protestors had stopped the movement of vehicles near the Gangolli Rama Mandir after learning about the fire incident in the morning.
During the afternoon, people from one community allegedly attacked a person named Satish Bhandary. The attack was said to be of grave nature. A person named Santosh was also admitted to hospital after sustaining injuries in another incident of assault.
Later another group pelted stones at a house and Moideen Jumma Masjid near Urban bank. During this time Maulana Mira Sahib from the Masjid sustained injuries on his hands. The house belonging to Asma Abdul Rahim was also attacked. Raziya and Amina were admitted to hospital after sustaining injuries in this attack.
Several arrested
It is learnt that more than 40 persons have been arrested relating to the unrest in the area. Out of these, 12 persons have been booked for interrupting peace in the area. The arrests have been made in connection to the clashes and not the fire incident.
A welder has been suspected of playing a major role in the fire incident, but he has been absconding. A Maruti car used by him has been seized. It is also claimed that a miscreant has been detained by police.
Three KSRP, five DAR platoons and hundreds of police personnel have been deployed in the town to maintain peace.
