Mangaluru: Confusion over auto fares continues; another revision likely

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Jan 21: Though auto fares were slashed by Rs 5 earlier this month, it is learnt that auto rickshaw drivers have been reluctant to implement the new fares and have been charging the old fare of minimum Rs 25 from passengers.

In a meeting held at the deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday January 20 to resolve the issue, consensus on the auto fare could not be reached. The auto drivers demanded Rs 23 as minimum fare and Rs 13 per kilometer thereafter and argued that auto fares have not been revised elsewhere in the state.

Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim suggested that the fare could be revised to Rs 22 minimum and Rs 12 per kilometre, which the drivers rejected. Now more time has been given to the auto drivers to think and decide on the matter.

Hence the confusion on fares will continue for some time without the passengers knowing what to pay. It is worth noting that even without implementing the revised fare of Rs 20, the meeting discussed a hike from the existing Rs 20.

A minimum fare of Rs 20 (first 1.5 kilometer) and Rs 13 per kilometer thereafter was fixed on January 9 and directive from Regional Transport Authority was issued on the same. The new fare was to come into effect from January 12. The directive said that all autos should fix the digital meters and those meters should be upgraded to revised fares before January 31, failing which, strict action would be taken against violators.

Without any regard for the directive, the auto drivers charged the old fare of Rs 25 as their digital meters had the old rates. Passengers were made to believe that January 31, the deadline for fixing the digital meter, was also the date for the implement the new fare. But it was a wrong and illegal message.

The passengers have so far been paying Rs 25, and hardly any auto driver is charging Rs 20.

Deputy commissioner speaking to the media after the meeting said, "The interest of passengers will be borne in mind before taking any decision. LPG price has come down by 45 percent and petrol by 18 percent. Though the last rate fixed was Rs 23, it was enhanced to Rs 25 on demand last time.”

The auto drivers’ associations’ representatives and officers from RTO had participated in the meeting.

surprised how the deputy commissioner gives a press statement and then negotiates rickshaw fare. couldn't he do the other way round.
it looks the deputy commissioner's office has become too weak to take any decisions. I remember last year he made a press announcement banning
car parking on the road from karavali circle, kankanady to balmatta road, but this was never enforced.will the deputy commissioner take steps not mislead the public

It is indeed shocking that even after a week of the start of the order for revised fares, the 'auto gang' is not ready to accept and is literally grabbing 25 bucks from the public and following the old meters!!

With the goon like attitude of the drivers, majority of the passengers give the demanded fares for fear of being abused with curses and nasty words!! If this is the case in a place where most of the people are highly educated, aware of latest developments, and honest, just imagine how it will be in some remote place of this state or say Bihar or UP!! Unless the public fight for their rights nothing is going to change soon!!! Jai Hind!!

you are right ideal fare is only Rs.15/- considering the reduction in the fuel prices, when the petrol/diesel price was increased, even though it is running in gas Auto drivers had misused public money. Rs.22/- is only cheating we will not get Rs.3 change nor Rs.7/- when we give Rs.30/- Auto drivers are so dangerous.

Rickshaw drivers especially those in Bangalore never return the change. they keep it for themselves and frown at you if the change is demanded. whenever i travel to Bangalore, as i start to get down the bus, these rickshaw drivers surround me and start negotiating the price to to the intended destination. generally they start with around four times the legal price even after tough negotiation i end up paying at least two times the legal price. the law should be very tough on rickshaw drivers flouting the rules.

In Mumbai, at least within Greater Mumbai, no auto driver do it just by fear of the public!!

This arbitrary charging was prominent at airports and railway stations, but there after the installation of prepaid taxis, at the most the drivers request for some tips that's all Karnataka is notorious when it comes to autos and taxis, most of the drivers look and behave like goons, absolutely not afraid of the law!!

In view of substantial reduction in gas prices, Rs.15 for 1.5 KM and Rs.10 for every K.M afterwards would ideals. Just like Auto owners Union, there should be auto commuters association with bargaining powers in Mangalore.

Best idea is to outsource the Auto Rickshaw business to a Company/Contractor. And these drivers shall work on a daily or monthly salary under this contractor.

The contract should be given to the highest bidder who shall comply with the terms and conditions of the contract laid by the RTO, that includes the at a competitive rates.

I'm sure readers will agree with me- at whatever price is fixed between Rs.20.01 to Rs.25.00, we all end up paying Rs.25.00 as the auto driver will say "no change" and if its fixed at Rs.22.00 99% of the passengers will not have the Rs.2/- change and end up giving Rs.25/- or Rs.30/- and they will simply hear "no change".
However if a passenger gives Rs.2/- less they will be harassed by the drives and abused as well... this is our UNFORTUNATE INDIA.

All auto drivers are not the same. There are many drivers who return the change, or take less even Re.1 or 2. I know this since many a times i travel by auto. and when all others are comparing the price reduction by buses owners, (due to change in Petrol & Disel price) what is the guarantee that they will not increase the price if the Disel price increase. Now if the auto fare is reduced, if the Gas price increase will there be again rise in auto price. Even that time We the general public has to pay more.

Forget the 25 or 20,just check at the Railway stations. They ask me 150 Rs from Kankanady Junction to Jyoti circle and denied to use the meter.
They all join together and did not allow anyone to accept less than 150.

The auto drivers are - I regret to say are the offenders as far as traffic rules are concerned. They overtake from any side and if there is an accident the blame is directed to the drivers of four wheelers. Now - there is a case for fare reduction on account of price cut in diesel and petrol. The auto drivers should accept the increase in fares graciously bearing in mind that the fares were enhanced earlier when there was an increase in fuel costs. The same principle should applied when there is a decrease in price of fuel.

Not implementing the revised fares by the RTA is clear violation of rules, and shows how bold these auto drivers have become that they have the guts to defy rules set by the authorities!!

Recently some of my friends from Mumbai refused to pay the old fare after having read the clear directive from the authorities about reduction in fare however, with great difficulty as auto drivers here mostly act like hooligans and abuse passengers for not acceding to their demands!! Their argument is that the new fares have still not come into force, whereas the fact is that they have been given a deadline of Jan 31 to amend the meters and to implement the reduced fares clearly from Jan 12th! Mostly the docile public give in to the goonda type tactics of these drivers!! They do not fear if the passenger threatens them that he will complain to the authorities on violating directives!!

I do not think such type of arrogant behavior and not implementing the revised fares by competent authorities would have been tolerated by the public in Mumbai!! Traveling by autos here, especially by those who have lived in large metros like Mumbai, almost always leads to arguments and fights due to the high handed attitude and unreasonable demands over and above the meter charges by these autos giving flimsy reasons!!

Introduce Small sized cars like Tata Nano as local taxis. Operating license should be given to companies and not individuals. In case of any misbehavior by the driver, the company & driver both should be taken to task.
Monopoly has to end even in the case of city & express buses. Lastly all diesel autos have to be taken off the road from urban areas.

    Dear District Authorities
Please cancel All Auto permits who do not implement the tariff. One Liter LPG cost only 37 which a bajaj auto givens a mileage of 12 to 14 and Vespa will given 20 so initial cost per kilometer is only Rs3 if you add tyre and maintenance expenses it should not cross Rs 5. why do you need double margin ?

Please cancel all permit and issue new permit who agree for new tariff.

In light of the drastic of crude and the subsequent reduction of retail price of petrol, the minimum fare should be Rs. 15 and Rs. 10 per KM.

Autos charge high and above all do 'dadagiri' with the customers.
