Mangaluru, Jan 19: Through a press release, Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police, Dr Sharanappa, has noted the programme, 'Virat Hindu Hridaya Sangama' that was held near Lord Mahalingeshwara Temple at Puttur had concluded in a peaceful manner under the aegis of Vishwa Hindu Parishat and Bajrang Dal on January 16.
He noted that pelting of stones between people of two different religions had occurred when participants were returning from the above programme, at Karaya in Uppinangady. This had given rise to heightened tensions, and senior police officials had promptly visited the spot and brought the situation under control, he noted.
'Our department has already set up 56 closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) in various places in the distrct. After the said incident at Karaya, miscreants have been making attempts to disrupt peace in Beltangady and Puttur taluks. In this background, steps are being taken to identify sensitive areas and install CCTV cameras in sufficient numbers to keep an eye on the movement of anti social elements,' he explained.
The SP noted that the police have already identified about 82 sensitive areas in connection with the above incidents, and to post staff there. He said that one assistant superintendent of police, two deputy superintendents of police, five circle police inspectors, 27 police sub-inspectors, 20 assistant police sub-inspectors, 365 head constables and constables, a contingent of district armed reserve police, ten contingents of Karnataka State Reserve Police, and one Rapid Action Force have been entrusted with the task of patrolling these troubled areas and keep vigil. Steps have also been taken for arranging special night patrolling and vehicle checks, he added.
Dr Sharanappa noted that various organizations, institutions and members of the public have already been cooperating with the police department in maintaining peace, law and order in the society. He warned that suitable legal steps would be taken if miscreants try to disturb peace in the society in the coming days.
