Puttur, Jan 13: A four-year-old boy died after being hit by a Maruti Omni vehicle on Monday January 12 evening.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Sali (4).
The accident occurred at Kavu Maniyadka on Puttur-Sullia state highway, when the boy was walking by the side of road with his mother. The vehicle involved with the accident was used for transporting poultry birds.
The injured boy was taken to a private hospital in Puttur immediately, but he had breathed his last by then. In the hospital compound, a group of angry relatives of the boy assaulted the Omni driver, giving rise to anxious moments. Puttur police reached the spot, and dispersed the crowd by resorting to light caning.

Jeep hits bridge - one dead, six injured
One person died and six others sustained injuries after a jeep hit the sidewall of Kumbra bridge on Mani-Sampaje state highway late night on Sunday January 11 and then dashed against a protective wall made of mud at the end of the bridge.
The jeep was carrying some residents of Bangeru in Mogaru village in Beltangady taluk, who were returning after taking part in a religious programme held at Pallattur, when tragedy hit. Kariyappa (52) from Bangeru, who was sitting in the front seat, was tossed out of the jeep. His skull was separated from the torso, and he died on the spot.
Other passengers in the jeep, identified as Subbi, Dombaiah, and Giriyappa, all from Bangeru, and Sinchana, Saumya, and Meenakshi from Sakleshpur Kumbadi, and driver of the jeep, Rukmaya, escaped with minor injuries.
Kumbra Bridge has always been a dangerous spot because of the fact that it is narrow. The bridge has also been used to lay cables, and there are some concrete mounds on the bridge, creating problems for the vehicles. This road is experiencing heavy traffic after diversion of traffic from Sjiradi Ghat Road. It is learnt that the driver of the jeep was trying to give way for a Bangalore-bound night bus, when the jeep hit the concrete sidewall on the bridge, after which the driver lost control over the vehicle. The jeep then came to a stop after hitting a mud wall, it is gathered.
Pickup truck tumbles - 11 injured
In another accident in Puttur, 11 persons including some pedestrians were injured while returning from the Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation convention held at Mangaluru late night on Sunday Jauary 11, after a pickup vehicle hit them.
The accident occurred at Balya village on the state highway between Uppinangady and Subrahmanya. Some youth including Nawaz Sharif, Khaleel, and Shafiulla, were returning to Sunkadakatte by walk after participating in the programme held Mangaluru and Nelyady, and then returning to Balya in a jeep. When a pickup vehicle came that way, they signalled it to stop, as they wanted to travel by that vehicle to Sunkadakatte.
As soon as the driver of the pickup, Vinesh Kumar, applied the brakes, the vehicle went out of his control. It fell by its side after hitting the pedestrians who were waiting to travel by it. While Shafiulla and Nawaz Shariff suffered fracture of their legs, Khaleel was admitted into a private hospital in Mangaluru with grievous injuries to his head.
Several persons including Abdul Rawoof, Muhammed, Tamim, Hameed, Aziz etc escaped with minor injuries. A report about the accident was filed in Kadaba police station.
