Kasargod, Dec 27: A newborn was tossed into rivulet at Uppala in the district late night on Friday December 26. Some locals, who saw the incident, alerted the police. The police on Saturday December 27 arrested the grandmother of the child, who allegedly threw the baby into the water.

The baby was reportedly born to a 16-year-old unmarried girl four days ago. The body of the child was recovered from the rivulet. The maternal grandmother of the child has been identified as Sita (40).

It is gathered that the child was born out of illicit relationship and because of this reason, the family had decided to kill the child. The child was born in Kumble hospital four days ago. The mother of the child and the newborn were discharged from the hospital on Friday. The child's mother and grandmother who left the hospital after discharge directly approached the rivulet in an auto rickshaw and tossed the baby into the rivulet, sources said.

The police have registered a case and are investigating further.

If there is hush hush on the father figure of this child, the police should put pressure to unmask the culprit. It may not be a surprise if the child's father is someone from their own family circle. This 16 year old girl, having such focused woman for mother could not have wandered far from home base.

Why are all of you only blaming the mother and grandmother? Where is the father of the child? Does his responsibility stop at donating his sperm? If he had stood by the girl, they wouldn't have resorted to this. And as a society, what do we have to speak for? We have created a society which would have ostracised that girl so much for an unwed pregnancy for her to take such extreme steps. And do we have easy system for putting up such babies for adoption?

@Sandy Udipi, you are mistaken here my dear.It is not the father who threw the Baby ,but two women. The mother of the Baby is underaged, but her mother ?The mother let the Girl give birth to the child and just threw off as if it was some garbage,Where are the Feelings of a women?why did she wait till then?should have sought help or the man who had illicit affair with a minor Girl and settled things Long back,or given the Baby to some ashram .but not so.She could have file a case against the man because of minor Girl. She didnt.why the mother didnt take care of her Girl ?The Girl should definately know who is the culprit or she was also partner in this affair is the question.Anyway poor Baby had no Chance to be in this world for Long.may it be with angels above .

I am not absolving the two women of their crime. But if the father of the child had supported and the social and economic mileu was such that the two women had options available to them, they would have not resorted to this step.
I guess as Nin said the father is probably within the family

Seasons greetings to each and everyone of you!!!! What has happened is wrong. But blaming or accusing womenhood is absolutely wrong. Guys, pl remember your mother, grand mother, sister, sister- in-law and mother-in-law before you blame this way. Now this grand mother should be hold responsible for letting this to happen. She allowed and decided to kill the innocent. I hope the law takes its course immediately and catches the guy who made use of this girl. All three are responsible and the punishment given to them should be a lesson in future for everyone.

Keeping the baby alive, the mother would have fought a legal battle for the father irrespective of whether he is married. Exposing such persons in the public is good for the health of the society.

    @ Be Positive

Excuse me, 'These women' wants to be respected ?? Do these two make the entire womenfolk to you ? Aren't your mother/wife/sister/daughter women too ? If all were similar, would you have been alive today ? Shouldn't readers generalize men too because she didn't get pregnant by uttering some 'Mantra' ??

I agree, the episode is gruesome, very very cruel. They should have taken precaution or some measures as soon as the girl discovered to be pregnant. When they didn't succeed in all this, they should have at-least given the child for adoption.

Killing the baby is utterly cruel.
