Mangaluru, Dec 27 (DHNS): The Animal Welfare Board of India has submitted seven complaints to the Mulky police citing violation of rules during the Mulky Arasu Kambala held on Thursday.
However, no FIR has been filed and the Kambala organisers have been asked to give in writing that they will not violate the rules henceforth.
People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) Director Dr Manilal and Kaustub Pal of Animal Welfare Board of India had recorded the Kambala held at Mulky. According to the Animal Welfare Board of India, the organisers at the event violated several laws.
Using two to three thick nose ropes inserted through the same hole in the nasal septum causing pain to the animals, splashing slush water on the buffaloes, transporting the animals in an inhuman manner were some of the violations noticed.
“The safetymeasures to unload the buffaloes from vehicles were insufficient, and no veterinary care was available, even though hundreds of buffaloes were used in the event,” the Animal Welfare Board members noted. The Kambala committee members gave in writing to not violate rules.
Kambala issue - more confusion than clarity

After the Kambla resumed recently after the court order came, people thought that the traditional Kambala would go on now without any interruptions. But more confusion has been created after that than the clarity which was supposed to have been seen.
The Dakshina Kannada district Kambala committee president Bhaskar S Kotian has accused the animal welfare board of crossing a limit.
"Even before the court order came, Miyar Kambala was held without any violence. But during the Baradibeedu Kambala where more policemen than the general public were seen in the name of ‘communal disruptions’, it was complained that 47 buffaloes were tortured. This is an attempt to disrupt Kambla for which the permission has come now to hold it without violence," Kotian said.
He was speaking when he presided over the famous Mulky Arasu Kambala event on Thursday, December 25, 2014.
"No way will we allow this to happen. Kambala is historical. It belongs to all the religions," Kotian added.
During the event, members from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), doctors, tahsildar from Mangaluru and various high ranking police officers were seen as observers.
Meanwhile Peta director Dr Manilal Valliyate has said the Kambala race violated several laws, including a Supreme Court ruling and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, which makes it illegal to cause animals suffering.
''The inspectors appointed by the board reported that there were at least 10 violations when I got the last report. Some buffaloes had three thick ropes in their noses instead of one single thin rope to control the animal, there was slapping of buffaloes, excessive yanking etc. I will be able to give the exact nature of violations after I receive the report from inspectors on Friday,'' said Dr Valliyate.
Earlier, the AWBI had filed 21 non cognizable and one cognizable FIRs at Karkal rural police station last week, pointing out that cruelty to buffaloes were a common place during Kambala event organised at Baradi in Udupi district.
The Udupi District Administration had given a clean chit to Baradibeedu Kambala with the officials deputed by the district administration stating that no violence had taken place.
Kambala organisers said that the board has malafide intentions and wants to stop Kambala at any cost. ''We have taken due notice of high court order and have conducted as per its advise,'' the organisers said.
Kambala continues while the conflict on it also following it.
