Kundapur, Dec 23: In a daylight theft here on Tuesday December 23, a man was looted of Rs 2 lac by a person who tricked him by diverting his attention.
The incident surprisingly happened in a bank which is considered as relatively safe.
Ravi Kharvi had brought the cash to a bank to deposit on behalf of a petrol pump. He had kept the cash on the counter when a person standing behind him diverted his mind and fled away with the money.
It is learnt that Ravi Kharvi had brought Rs 3,11,000 cash to Canara Bank in Kundapur on behalf of Mahalingeshwara petrol pump in Basrur. The petrol pump belongs to Subrahmanya Kantha and is managed by Kishore Kumar. Ravi stood in a queue to deposit the amount and made two deposit slips for Rs 1.10 lac and Rs 2 lac.
He deposited Rs 1.10 lac and was about to make the other deposit for which he had kept the cash on the cash counter. The person who was behind him in the queue drew Ravi's attention to a ten-rupee note lying on the floor and requested him to pick it up. While Ravi bent down to pick up the note, the man disappeared with the cash of Rs 2 lac which was on the counter. Ravi realized this only a few minutes later, and by then the thief had made good his escape.
Surprisingly, it was later learnt that the CCTV camera in the bank was off during the incident. It was only switched on later. Nobody knows why the camera switched off. It is believed that the culprit could have been aware that the camera was off and with this knowledge he might have come to commit the crime, or he might have himself put it off through an accomplice. No cameras have been installed outside the bank.
Police arrived at the spot and started investigations.
