Mangaluru, Dec 23: In a tragic incident, a 12-year-old girl died after accidentally falling into a well at Bejai here on Tuesday December 23.

Savitha, daughter of Parasappa and Shantabai from Lingapur in Badami, Bagalkot, fell into a deep well that is said to be filled with junk and some water, and covered with a net. The well is located near an unoccupied house close to Bejai museum. The family of the girl stays in the same neighbourhood in a rented house.

As per eyewitnesses, Savitha and her friends were playing with a ball on Tuesday morning. During their play, the ball fell on the net covering the well. Despite warning from her friends, Savitha is said to have climbed over the wall of the well and got on to the net to fetch the ball. However, the net gave way due to her weight and she fell in.

The fire personnel who were immediately informed rushed to the spot. However, the rescue effort was not easy due to the depth of the well and its contamination. When one of the personnel climbed down, he experienced difficulty in breathing and was forced to come back up.

The fire personnel then brought a pump to pour in water into the well so that the level would come up. After some efforts, Savitha was pulled out of the well, but she was already dead.

Savitha was a student of 6th standard in a school at Bejai.

Nagaraj Poojary, the fire personnel who climbed down the well and brought out the body, said that it was a 60 ft deep well, and there was only water for 10 ft and the rest was filled with junk and wood. "Due to this, the air at the bottom of the well had become poisonous, and it was difficult to breathe. I could go down only after we filled some more water, but even then it was very difficult," he said.

It may be her fault to climb the wall despite warnings, but why they are keeping such unused wells open .May her soul rest in peace. Loosing a child is always heart breaking for parents and may almighty god give them peace and courage to bear the loss.

Forget about safety of wells. Look at the roadside gutters,4 feet deep and vehicle parked next to it. Come to Kadri ward and see a Pipe line Air Bleeder Valve Pit. Yesterday, seventh vehicle fell into the pit. Corporator has been told 25 time at least but He did not gave a damn. Ex Mayor Rajni Duggana asked Corporator of the ward and Junior Engineer Roopa to cover the pit in 2011. By closing there will not be kickback but digging a new one will give sum to pocket.
There was open well on Kadri Temple New Road. This was there for more than 10 years on side of main road. As per a resident of area, local Corporator did not want to close it as Tankers were taking water. Well was so filthy and water from that well was supplied. I have noticed few Children of Bejai School throwing rocks into it. It took 2 months for me to get it close. With help of Mr Thakat Rao,head of Urban Developement at DC office, I have achieved the goal to close the well. Junior Engineer and Acting commissioner took that long time just to close a dangerous well. A child could have lost life in it. This is Mangalore.
There is a open well in a Ministers property which does not have wall. It was showed to Health Official and He ignored it. Let us wait for another bad news.

Very sad- However seems like the fire dept is not well equipped. In other countries even the Animal rescue are better equipped.
Its high time the Fire dept wakes up and themselves with better Equipment and training.

    My heart felt condolences..
I comment on non equipped Fire department. Canister are available to get protection from poisonous gases. Personal Oxygen Kits are available when getting inside a confined area / deep well. Why can't our government provide these emergency Kits to the Fire dept. Our Tax payers money is misused rather used. I am ready, to donate one such unit.Shame to our departments for not upgrading themselves with the modern equipments. What is the use in reaching the spot and watching the seen with helpless act. If canister was used, she could have been rescued immediately.

The ward incharge officer(muncipality) and the local corporater (political )should be held responsible for their negligence.
They should have taken note of such unused hazardous wells within their jurisdiction. Then they advise the owner of the place either to close or maintain with required safety measures.
If they don't listen, then penalise the owner heavily.

Mr Alva, what punishment are you so eager to prescribe? are you talking about. The article does clearly state that the well wall was intact, the well was covered with a net and the tragedy occurred as a result of the girl climbing on to a weak net which most likely was not meant to bear the weight of a human. What negligence on whose part are you alleging?
