Mangaluru, Dec 16: On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, commemorating India's military victory over Pakistan in 1971 that resulted in the liberation of Bangladesh, the citizens on Tuesday December 16 gathered at the War Memorial in Kadri Park and paid homage to the martyrs of the war.
The 'Vijay Diwas' commemoration ceremony was organized by the Dakshina Kannada Ex-Servicemen's Association Mangaluru under the aegis of Lions Clubs International, District 317 D and Shastavu Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple Trust (R).
After accepting the guard of honour and laying wreaths at the memorial, H S Manjunatha Murthy MJF, district governor, Lions Club Dist 317D said, "We are proud to remember the great sacrifices and services of martyrs to this country. Let whoever does good work for our country be blessed by God."
On this occasion North Kerala Educational Society gave away a cheque of Rs 62,000 to Dakshina Kannada Ex-Servicemen's Association.
Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said that it is a appreciable day. "The memories will remain eternal. I also express my gratitude to the defence officers from the army, navy and the air force who guard the country."
Uma M G, principal district and sessions judge, Mangaluru said, "Four decades ago our men had surrendered their lives for our country and it is time for us to pay respect to their duty and unforgettable sacrifices."
Police commissioner R Hitendra said, "The family members of the martyrs have to be remembered for their sacrifices. We have to remember the martyrs who lost their lives in the battle and keep their memories alive. The war which was won should be remembered as one of our greatest battles."
Col N Sharath Bhandary, president of Dakshina Kannada Ex-Servicemen's Association Mangaluru welcomed the guests. S M Airan, general secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. Ex-servicemen paid their respect to the martyrs.
Zilla panchayat CEO Tulasi Maddineni, SP Dr S D Sharanappa, group commander of NCC Col S R Sriram, officials of army, navy and air force and others were also present on the occasion.
