Udupi, Dec 16: Nineteen child labourers consisting of 10 boys and 9 girls were rescued from from Malpe fisheries port here on Tuesday December 16. The children were engaged in the task of picking fish.
The children were rescued in a joint operation by the department of labour, district Balakarmika Yojana Sangha, town municipality, department of women and child welfare, department of education, the department of social welfare, officials of the children protection unit and other like-minded groups and associations. The operation was conducted on after receiving persistent complaints from locals.
The children were handed over to the child welfare committee so that they may be educated and rehabilitated.
