Mangaluru: When emergency teams rushed to detect 'bomb' on Netravati bridge...

Mangaluru, Dec 11: It was quite a scene at Netravati bridge here on Wednesday December 11, as fire fighters, police personnel, bomb disposal squad and canine squad all gathered to find a 'bomb' on the bridge!

The news of the 'bomb' sent shivers through hundreds of commuters who traverse the bridge, while some others went about their day unfazed.

What was it all about? Well, there was no bomb, at least not a real one. It was simply a Sagar Kavach mock drill undertaken by the Mangaluru police commissionerate to test the preparedness of the emergency teams and the Ullal police to deal with such situations.

The police control room sent out a message to the Ullal police through the wireless that a bomb had been placed in Netravati bridge and they should rush to the spot without delay to find and defuse the explosive. The Ullal police wasted no time in informing the bomb disposal squad, fire fighters and canine squad.

The teams searched every nook and corner of the Netravati railway bridge but could not detect any bomb. They then moved on to the main bridge and continued the search.

Finally, somewhere in the middle of the bridge, they found a bundle with the words 'explosive' written on it. The firemen, the bomb disposal squad and the canine squad rushed to examine the bundle. The officials of the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) gave a demo on defusing the 'bomb', after which the Ullal police took the bundle into their custody.

The mock drill lasted for about three hours. The commuters who initially panicked at the possibility of a 'bomb' on Netravati bridge, heaved a huge sigh of relief once they realized it that was only a demo.

Most of the Mock drill are happens Pre-planned. And even this one looks like they got information one week before itself, its just to reach their target in order to obtain promotion & benefits. if these are real Bomb these police & Fire fighters will reach after the Blast itself.

see our police will handle bombs without protective measure by wearing bomb protection jackets,
just like ATS chief HEMANTH KARKARE went fight with terrorist without a bullet proof jacket and we all know the result.

The Nethravati Bridge picture is very shabby compared other parts of the world. Our authorities are not bothered to maintain our beautiful place. If any foreigners visiting our place will definitely have negative opinion.

Unfortunately, such drills are a must in present day life.

Looks like this was only a 'Bomb Search' drill excluding disposal part of it. The drill must be carried out with all concerned wearing full gear (of course with a fake 'Bomb').

But look at the last 3 pictures - police and the 'Bomb' Disposal Team Member(s) - handling the 'explosive' with bare hands! Where is the protective gear?!

God forbid, cannot imagine this bomb disposal team handling a real situation!

The bomb squad are not wearing a gear on themselves, When there is a real bomb, the cops will say I forgot my pistol in the police station and leave...

These kind of drills are required so that when a real bomb is placed, they can also be ready for the emergency. Once I was standing outside the Park hotel in Delhi and one guy forgot a brief case at the bus stop and someone called the police and the bomb squad. We were observing from a distance predicting clearly there was no bomb, but one can's take chances.

Great... The mock drill indicates that Mangalore Police have an alert department. The Ullal Police have indeed risen to the occasion. The credit not only goes to the Ullal squad but also the department in general and The Commissioner of Police in particular.

Wah... Nice demo.. When there is real bomb found, police will never reach before it explode & it will kill several people.. Normally bombs will defused by trained squad itself, so whats the use to do demo in public places & creating drama. These all publicity gimmick & its like "Huli Banthu Huli" Kannada story.

The main intentions of these mock drills is not only to test the preparedness of the squad, but also to educate the general public what precaution they should take when such situation arises.

    Yep!
    Enough of this 'mock drills'.
1.Heard 2 days back of a 'mock drill' going awry and 4 getting injured.
    2. In B'lore a young girl lost her life because of a mock fire drill
    some 2 years back.

This has become a 'mockery drill' of late.

These drills may actually 'mock' at us in times of need.

It's a good move by our Police Authority...At least they took immediate action which is appreciable...Please do not think that this incident has wasted people's time. What if the bomb was real?? In countries like Japan, they give a mock demo for earthquakes and fire accidents every week in schools...and every child knows how to deal with such situations....

Please stop this nonsense again and again. Mock drill has to be practiced how to curb the communal violence, moral policing, stabbing, spreading the rumors on what's app to create the communal tensions etc. These are the main problems of Mangaluru and surrounding areas. Police have to practice how to tackle this instead of going behind the bombs every time.
