Vijay Mallya quits from MCF board, company's stock price soars

Bengaluru, Dec 1 (DHNS): UB Group Chairman Vijay Mallya on Monday resigned from the Board of Directors of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd (MCFL) with immediate effect.

As per a filing to BSE on Monday, Mangalore Chemicals said, "Mallya, a director on the board of directors of the company, has resigned with immediate effect.

Following the development, the company stock shot up 15.3 per cent to Rs.94.05 a piece on BSE, while benchmark Sensex was trading flat at 28,687.72 points.

Mallya had engaged in battle with Deepak Fertilisers to retain control of MCF. The reason for Mallya's decision to step down from the company was not clear immediately.

Mallya's resignation comes amidst the dramatic turn of events in the company when two competing open offers for the shares of Mangalore Chemicals concluded unsuccessfully.

Mallya had joined forces with Kolkata-based industrialist Saroj Kumar Poddar to launch a counter bid against Deepak Fertilisers.

After the open offer last month which started on October 1 and closed on October 20, Zuari-UB group combine succeeded in acquiring 48,000 shares and presently holds 38.4 percent stake in MCFL.

The company made it possible after offering a counter bid at Rs 81.60 per share. The open offer also increased the Deepak Fertilisers's stake to 31.25 percent from 25.31 per cent stake through its subsidiary SCM Soilfert Ltd.

To get controlling stake in the MCFL, Vijay Mallaya's UB group along with Zuari group need about 12 per cent additional stake. At the same time, Deepak Fertilisers would require more than 18 percent stake in the MCFL.

A good or bad man is not judged by his way of spending but the way he treats the society and the nation. Being middle aged man, my doubt today, is weather i should spend my money for myself or I should expand my business to create employment and pay taxes to the government. Looking at Mr.Mallya, i would prefer spending it for myself. Mr.Mallya made a mistake by starting an airline to give us world class experience and taxes to the Government, employment to thousands.
One more observation: Shooting with bikini clad models was his marketing strategy. He could have paid this money to some actor/actress for modelling, which he has not. Even though he failed in his business, he can be a great resource person for someone who wants to know learn true business.

This is welcome news for MCF which has been in the red ever since the production was halted 2 months back.
The Company should now see better management which will initiate and ensure that just demands are made to the Ministry concerned and ensure quickest possible solution to the issues being faced with regard to Naphtha based units and hasten the completion of the Gas pipeline and resumption of production. Apart , MCF also feeds numerous ancillary Industries in and around Bykampadi and nearby small Industries who are depend on it apart from thousands of workers at the Panambur unit. MCF is the only major fertilser unit in Karnataka and the shortage in Urea & DAP will be felt by farmers in the Kharif Season of 2015. Hence the need to ensure quickfire solutions as delay in resumption of production will only mean more losses and damage to the unit . MCF has in its past 4 decades faced numerous problems and has overcome every problem thanks to its strong Management and Marketing team which has also entered into trading and helping in increasing the indirect revenue earned by trading in several popular Agro products.Jai Mangala !!!

If he paid all his dues to his employees, I think we should not celebrate his down fall. He tried to give many of them job at least for few years. In a business loss and profit is part of that.

A good man who caused a loss of more than Rs 8000 crore to public sector banks. A good man who boasted of personally ing attractive air-hostesses who were forced to attend his late night parties. A good man who was busy shooting for his kingfisher calendar, with bikini clad models while his business empire crumbled and his employees were left in the lurch. A very good man indeed.
