MUMBAI, Oct 28: A 25-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping from her boyfriend's building in south Mumbai on Saturday, apparently because talks about marriage between the two families failed, the police said.
Charishma Kakadia had come back to India after getting an MBA degree from UK this May and fell in love with Nipur Joshi (27), an interior decorator working at her house in the posh Kemps Corner area of South Mumbai, the police said.
"Initially, her parents had approved of the affair. However, during a visit to the boy's house in diwali, the well-off parents of the girl found out that the boy was not of equal status and the marriage talks were called-off," a police official said.
The girl went to visit Nipur at his house in Malabar Hill where she committed suicide this afternoon. "We suspect the Joshis did not open the door which led the depressed and hot tempered girl to commit the extreme act," the official said.
She allegedly jumped on the parapet from a window in the five-storey building's staircase. Charishma then leapt and hit the ground 65 feet below, he said, adding she was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead.
Meanwhile, the police have detained Nipur and his family members for questioning.
The girl's father is a well-known city doctor and works as a honorary physician for the Brazilian consulate, while Nipur's father has a business of scents and perfumes, the official added.
