Suva Oct 15 (IANS): Fiji will stop sending peacekeepers to Liberia in the face of the Ebola crisis in Africa, a police official said Wednesday.
Ben Groenewald, commissioner of the Fiji Police Force, said that the first lot of officers is expected to be back in Fiji at the end of next month while the last batch is set to return in May next year, Xinhua reported.
There are 27 Fijian police officers serving with the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), Groenewald said.
The Fiji Police Force has been informed that all necessary precautions are in place at the UNMIL, Groenewald added.
Meanwhile, Fiji's health ministry has activated its communicable taskforce and has been meeting with other agencies such as the defence ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure they are well prepared for the Ebola virus outbreak.
