Udupi, Oct 10: The loud sound heard in Manchikere area near Manipal on Monday October 6 has been analysed.
When the loud sound was heard beneath the earth, a panic situation among the animals and birds was reported. It is said the animals and birds are the first to experience movements under the earth and thus respond in an unusual manner.
When the loud sound under the earth was heard at Rajiv Nagar at Manchikere near Manipal on Monday at 11.15 morning, the animals too responded. The dogs started barking for long and birds started flying as if it was evening.
The area between Malpe and Manipal is said to fall under the weak point zone. A weak point is a fault in the earth's crust and upper mantle where the rock layers have ruptured and slipped.
The loud sound was said to have been heard even six kilometres away from Rajiv Nagar where the incident took place.
As per experts, some rare zoological activities in land and water are not uncommon in the weak point zones. These activities are usually reported between May and November. This has been confirmed by Dr B M Ravindra, former Deputy Director from the Department of Mines and Geology. Hence, the type of sound heard this week was not a rare thing to happen in the area.
In April 2014, a sudden increase in ground water level was reportedly seen in wells and other places of the area. Later, a fissure was also seen in the earth near Manchikere on July 1.
H N Udayshanker, Geologist at Manipal Institute of Technology says that these three incidents are interlinked and the loud sound from beneath the earth could be due to the collapse of cavity to make adjustments for hollow space created beneath the earth.
