Rio de Janeiro, Oct 7 (IANS): The USA women's basketball team earned a berth at the Rio 2016 Olympics by defeating Spain 77-64 in the final of the FIBA World Championships.
The result in Istanbul secured Geno Auriemma's team their fourth title in the past five World Championships, Xinhua reported Tuesday.
"It's very difficult to win these championships," Auriemma was quoted as saying on the official Rio 2016 website.
"I' m really proud of our team. These guys make a great sacrifice, because they just finished playing in their own league. It's a tremendous sacrifice that they made for their country, and I can't be more proud of them," said Auriemma.
The USA's men and women are so far the only teams to qualify for the Rio 2016 basketball tournaments.
