• Governor Krishna calls for modification in present education system

Mumbai, Oct 13: Governor S M Krishna observed that the education system of today has become too much examination oriented. There is little room or incentive for students to become inquisitive or curious about things they do not know but would like to know. He said it is high time our education planners modify the present system of education and leave some time and energy for creative thinking among students. This according to him, is essential if India wishes to maintain its primacy in science and technology.

He was speaking after inaugurating Nehru Science Centre's newly-created permanent gallery on India's Technology Heritage here recently. The gallery depicts the 4500-year old technology heritage of India in an interesting and interactive way. The gallery will not only create awareness among students about India's rich heritage in technology, it will also importantly create a sense of pride in them about the country.

Impressed by the gallery, he called upon the people particularly students and the youth to visit the gallery and tell others to see the wonderful exhibition.

Chairman of the Godrej Group Adi Godrej said that it is amazing to know how strong India was in technology at a time when Europe was not even civilized. Congratulating the Nehru Science Centre for putting up the gallery, he hoped that the exhibition would stimulate scientific temper among students.

Director General of National Council of Science Museums I K Mukherjee, Director of Science City G SRautela, Curator of Nehru Science Centre S M Khened and large number of students and science lovers were present on the occasion.

The exhibits at the Technology Heritage Gallery include: Introduction, Glimpses of Indian Technology Traditions, Zero: The Indian Invention, Early Mathematical Foundations, Ancient Indian Technologies at a Glance, Stone Age Tools, Agriculture, Pottery, Harappan Technologies, The Great Granaries, Gharats: Harnessing Nature's Energy, Mining and Metallurgy, Copper Smelting, Iron Smelting, Delhi Iron Pillar: The Rustless Wonder, Zinc Smelting: An Indian contribution, Ayurveda, Rasashala, Sushruta Surgery, Architecture and so on.
