Mangalore: Police nab two inter-state thieves, recover gold worth Rs 8.5 lac

Mangalore, Sep 23: The Puttur police have arrested two notorious inter-state thieves who were involved in nearly 15 cases of thefts in Puttur, Sullia, Mangalore and Kasargod district.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday September 23, SP Dr Sharanappa said the arrested are P A Ahmed Kabeer (23) from Chettanchal in Kasargod, and Sajuddin alias Farooq (30) from Mangad, Kasargod.

The accused are involved in four theft cases lodged in Puttur town police station, three in Puttur rural, two in Sullia, one in Kadri police station in Mangalore and four in various police stations of Kasargod district.

The police recovered gold ornaments weighing 304 grams worth Rs 8.5 lac and a bike worth Rs 50,000 from the accused. They already spent the cash they had stolen, the SP said.

The two were arrested near Arlapadavu under Puttur rural police limits on Tuesday September 23. The police were checking vehicles near Arlapadavu, and when the accused, who were coming by bike, saw the police, they tried to escape. The police chased the duo and caught them, and on questioning, they were found to be inter-state thieves.

The SP said that incidents of thefts have been reported from various places around the district and with a view to tackle the problem, a meeting of the police department was convened headed by DSP and ASP. The police are all prepared to hunt down the culprits, he said.

The arrest operation was conducted under the direction of SP Dr Sharanappa, additional SP T P Shivakumar, Puttur sub-divisional ACP H D Mendonca, and led by puttur town police inspector Manjayya B K, Puttur rural police sub-inspector Jagadish Reddy R and town police SI Abdul Khader and other police personnel.
