Mangalore, Sep 19: A day after six students were assaulted at Pumpwell here, the police on Friday September 19 detained nine members of Bajrang Dal for questioning.
The names of the detained persons were not divulged, but sources said that out of them, only one was a student, and the rest working in different places.
The police also detained Bajrang Dal district convener Bhujang Kulal for questioning, and soon after the news of his detention spread, Bajrang Dal activists gathered in large numbers in front of the police station and protested.
Around 300 protestors expressed their ire over Kulal's detention. Police sources said that Kulal was detained he was suspected to have masterminded the attack on the students.
After grilling Kulal for nearly five hours, the police released him. Police commissioner R Hitendra said that he would be questioned again on Saturday September 20.
Altogether, 11 were accused in the case, out of which nine were detained, and two are absconding.
Students of MIFSC Kalandar Shahid, Shameem, Mohammed Shahad, Ashique, Asfatulla and Shahbaz, were allegedly assaulted by members of Bajrang Dal following a clash between students last week over photography during a college function. On Thursday September 18, a big group came in a vehicle and allegedly assaulted the six students in broad daylight at Pumpwell, before fleeing the spot. Kalandar who was stabbed was seriously injured.
