Mangalore, Sep 19: Union Ministry for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi on Monday said that there may be a possibility of MoUs being signed by India with Middle East countries and Malaysia to provide better job security for Non-Resident Indian workers.
Speaking at a press conference here, Vayalar said that there are also plans to amend the Immigration Act of 1983 to make it more transparent and simple and thus prevent exploitation of workers who go abroad for jobs. The MoU may be signed by the end of this month, he added.
Further a proposal to do away with sponsorship route adopted by overseas companies is also in the pipeline, he said.
Vayalar said that Indian workers who went abroad for employment on regular labour contracts were issued a smart card. These cards carry details on the terms and conditions of their employment and would ensure their safety under their employers.
