Mangalore, Sep 17: In a major operation, the Puttur rural police are reported to have seized a kilogramme of material, resembling and suspected to be brown sugar on Saturday night.

Since the case could have the involvement of much wider a gang and inter-state ramifications, the police are not coming forth with much information. The idea is also to ensure escape of persons connected with the case.

Exact information regarding the spot of seizure, if any persons have been arrested are not being provided to the media. The samples of the seized material are said to have been sent to Mangalore for analysis. The details of the case would be publicized only after its confirmation of being genuine, police sources told Daijiworld on condition of anonymity.

If found to be real stuff, its value in illegal market could be anything beyond Rs one crore, said informed sources.

Interestingly, the local police did not have the slightest clue about the consignment. The tip-off is said to have been received by western range IGP Satyanarayana Rao himself, who at once alerted the Puttur rural police. They accordingly swung into action.

There are also reports that actually it could not be brown sugar at all and was only spurious stuff, possibly powdered Metacin tablets,  meant to be palmed off as brown sugar in view of heavy demand for it amongst youngsters. Not very long ago, a similar seizure was made which created a sensation around. But later it turned out to be some grain flour after analysis.
