Anonymous letters against priests - Madanthyar Church counters Samanvaya's claims

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady
With Inputs frm Media Release

Beltangady, Aug 14: Following the protests over anonymous letters demeaning priests of Madanthyar church, and the subsequent clarification from Christa Samanvaya Samiti that it had nothing to do with them, the parish pastoral council of Sacred Heart Church, Madanthyar has issued a press release countering the Samiti's statements.

The release says that statements by 'Christha Samanvaya Samiti’ published in the media are "far from truth, baseless and misleading. It is a clever ploy to attract sympathy of the innocent people by making false propaganda through the media. They want to justify their anti-church and anti-faith writings and anonymous letters by garnering the support of innocent people."

The release further states, "We hereby declare that the agitation held on August 3 under the leadership of the parish pastoral council has nothing to do with the report the ‘Samiti’ published. There is not an iota of truth in it. There has been a continuous flow of anonymous letters for the past 15 years. They are written in a filthy and foul language in order to do character assassination of the parish priests of Madanthyar church, nuns, parish council members, various church associations and their office-bearers, heads of institutions and students. The ulterior motive of these writings is to tarnish the image of the parish and its educational institutions and other parish associations, and not even the Mangalore bishop has been spared. Filthy and foul writings against the bishop, priests, nuns, church organizations and others has a dubious purpose of dividing the innocent parishioners."

Alleging that vice-president of Samanvaya Samiti Jerald Correa had addressed the parish priest in an 'abusive' and 'threatening' way and that there were phone recordings to prove this claim, the release stated, "All the contents of the phone record are similar to the contents of the anonymous letters and therefore a complaint was lodged with the police.

"Besides, ‘Samanvaya Samiti‘ is publishing a tri-monthly Konkani periodical called ‘Samanvaya’ and John D'Souza alias Joe Prabhu, the CEO of ‘Samanvaya co-operative society’ is its editor. Keeping the church activities as a source, the ‘Samanvaya’ periodical has ridiculed and insulted the priests, ICYM, women’s associations, altar boys and girls, choir group, Marian Sodality and so on. It has made a mockery of the Way of the Cross, seven steps of Small Christian Community and the rites and rituals of church feasts and celebrations," the pastoral parish council alleged.

Calling for a ban on 'Samanvaya' periodical, the release stated, "All the believers in one voice should condemn the periodical and its editor for anti-church and anti-faith writings. In this regard again a complaint has been lodged with the police."

It further added, "'Samanvaya Samiti' has received all kind of support from the parishioners for its social activities. Most of them have deposits, shares and do transactions in the co-operative society of the Samiti. All the 650 families of the parish are participating in the resistance in an unprecedented way. We salute their commitment to the church and to their faith."

"After obtaining the signatures of all the parishioners, the parish pastoral council resolved to agitate against this scourge in a magnificent manner. During the agitation on August 3 Joel Mendonca (member of parish pastoral council) made the preliminary speech. Gregory Sera, (vice-president of PPC) addressed the parishioners and Ronald Sequiera (secretary of PPC ) was present. Vivek Pais (member of parish pastoral council) presented a memorandum on behalf of the parishioners demanding justice. In this regard the decision of the parish council is precise and unequivocal," the release stated.

"We have no personal issues here neither any politics. Our fight is against injustice and blasphemy. We have no mind to question the progress and administration of the ‘Samanvya Co-operative Society.’ The parishioners are deeply hurt, they are pained and we share their pain and are committed to their decision. The two persons (Jerald Corea and John D'Souza alias Joe Prabhu) whom we condemn are still underground and this is condemnable, shameful and disgusting. Let them come for swearing as well as for legal enquiry. This is our honest demand and the parish council is firm on that. Our fight is within the parameters of law. We have the blessings of Fr Lawrence Mascarenhas in this resistance and he has no other role. The Lord is with us in our fight against sinister forces," the release added.

Well Said Reshma. It is Samanvaya who destroyed a bright budding leader from Madanthyar and lead him to obscurity. Samanvaya and its leaders had a hidden agenda to destroy him because every one admired him while in good direction. Samanvaya and its crooks used him and finally dumped him. J R D'souza has only destroyed families to earn his leaving. Many people of all religions in Madanthyar curse his deeds.

by calling press meet J R Dsouza is justifying the action of Joe prabhu and Jerry correa. he is misleading the society by giving false statements. he is sowing poison in the society.while dealing with land disputes he takes commission from both the parties by using his crooked ways. whoever consulted him and taken his advice have ruined their life.for example Mr.Oswald pinto and Jerald correa. his existence in Madantyar church brings shame for all the parishioners. Madantyar parishioners know his duplicity and crooked nature.can any one tell me being former vice president of Madanthyar church why J R dsouza is supporting anti church and anti faith activities of samanvaya samiti?

Dear Madanthyar Parishioners & Samanvaya Members. It is sad to read all bad things about our own parish back in Gulf, throwing dirty linen in public. Being a parishioner, sometimes I pray and also feel pity on those people, who are not having a backbone to face people and writing anonymous letters, who wants spoil name of the Parish organization, former and present parish priests, Nuns, parish council and clergy of the our Holy Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Madanthyar. What they are going to gain and why they are doing this for their own community and how long ?(15years)
For everything there is a limit, and I have gone thru few letters for the last few years, which was written by professionals, insiders who are offshoot/break away group of Madanthyar Catholic Community, start targeting the church by writing those letters continuously and anonymously. But, if, two accused in this case are said to be innocent, why they cannot come in the front and prove they are innocent! Please come in the front like a gentlemen and compromise? The language they use is so vulgar and it is not at all appropriate for our children to read. The character assassination, tarnishing the image personally and writing blasphemous statements against the clergy, which are not at all acceptable
Now, we must find an amicable solution, and we all needs to close this issue forever, if they wants to prevail peace around Madanthyar parish. Because of these issues, both the parties were doing some good work towards the society are standstill and ultimately poor people are going to suffer. Whole Madanthyar parishioners clearly knows, who are those culprits, and of course GOD KNOWS, but parishioner have no proof to prove.
Let our Bishops, Government leaders and our community leaders around take up this issue more seriously and expedite forever, so LOVE, PEACE WILL PREVAIL with the blessings of Jesus. Today is the day of our Mother Mary, Let us pray Mother Mary for her intercession for peace in and around Madanthyar for ever.

I am the frequent vistor to Secred Heart Church Madanthyar . I am also known to people in and around Madanthyar . I have met parish priest Fr Lawrence Mascarenhas . He is a good person in the name of JESUS ! He is working for the christian community and for the development of Madanthyar Church and its Educational Institutions .
The so called Samanvaya periodical -books must be banned immediately . This is in the interest of his loving people .
The most suitable and appropriate name for the said Samanvaya must be re-produced and re-printed to read as “ SAMA ANNYAYA ” .
I standby the people of Madanthyar Church at this time of difficulty . I also standby the fight by Church people against the anonymous letters and the absconding “ Mr. KUREA and Mr. PURBU”
I am completely in agreement with the intension the parish council and their honest demand . I pray to The LORD to grant all serenity and strength to the parish council and the people of Madanthyar !

    DEAR FRIENDS,
ANYONE WHO THINKS THAT ANONYMOUS LETTERS ARE GOOD TO THROW IN THE WASTE PAPER BASKET, IT IS NOT SO EASY. THESE CULPRITS HAVE POSTED THOUSANDS OF COPIES TO THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN MADANTHYAR AND ELSEWHERE TO SPREAD THEIR EVIL AWARENESS. THESE LETTERS WHEN READ BY PEOPLE WHO ARE INTELLIGENT THEY GO TO WASTE PAPER BASKET. BUT THOSE INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE EVERYTHING THING THAT IS WRITTEN IT IS DIFFICULT TO DO THAT. HENCE, ME. JOE, PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT ANONYMOUS LETTERS TO EDUCATED INTELLIGENT PEOPLE IS ONE THING, BUT TO INNOCENT AND ORDINARY PEOPLE IS ANOTHER THING....

Mr. Correa is challenging his PP by registering Samanvaya as a religious minority trust within parish boundaries. Though it is within his legal rights PP and Parishioners can’t accept it. If he publishes a Konkani quarterly what is the problem? The Sacred Heart Church also is a public trust and its information if published in Samanvaya magazine and if it is only information and not any article copied or plagiarism, I don’t think there is any case. If you can’t beat him then join him. Otherwise PP must take lead and develop a thick skin about such laity. In seminary life lessons are not taught to live and let live. What is taught is to compete, control and dominate - all is to with power. Time is running fast in Mangalore where laity will register and administer bigger trusts under minority rights so long clergy do not develop inclusive mentality. Today is the feast of St. Maxmillian Kolbe, a great example of negotiation even if it coasted him his life he became a saint. So also in the Gospel Jesus tells Peter when asked how many times he must forgive his brother? Jesus tells: 70X7 meaning unlimited times. Let the PP and parishioners practice these two values negotiation and forgiveness and problem will be solved.

either of the case, head of the family (church) should be taken for task.
Rom 14:19, "So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up".
Mt 5:25 "Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you're on the way with him, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison".

This was said to whom ?? Jesus knew that his future followers (priests too ) would be strangled in such controversy... Wake up Mandyanthar PP and its councillors...In the long run nobody will buy your blame game...Take first step of reconciliation for the healthy churn and not scandalous church.

    Dear PEDDU
I agree with you to the extent that we must unite when Christians in Pakistan or Iraq or anywhere suffer. I also say further that it is not only when Christians suffer that we must fight unitedly but anyone suffers injustice, we must stand up, no matter what religion or country he or she belongs. All said and done, to stand up for above cause does not necessarily mean you have to neglect the suffering at your own backyard. Let the justice be meted out at home and guilty be punished. Madanthyar episode has lingered too long. Let's put an end to it by bringing the wrong to justice.

    Church's primary duty is to
    Take care of faithful.
Don't give too much of importance or be too concerned of those who malign. Off course it is VERY difficult but not impossible with Jesus.
Mother Theresa, left everything and cleansed Leapers too faced insults. Graham Stains gave up luxurious life in Australia for the dying leapers in Orissa, to follow what Jesus commanded "whatever you to to the least of my people, you do unto me" was killed.
Scriptures quote that followers of Jesus have to face tough times and insults.
Ignoring them will eventually find natural death of insulting language. Your well wishers will not take what they give.
Pray and seek strength to endure.
