Udupi: Third grader creates awareness on breast cancer

Media Release

Udupi, Aug 13: 'Protect Your Mom', a breast cancer awareness programme was conducted on Tuesday August 12 at Infant Mary's Higher Primary School, Parampalli here by Brent Adrial D’Souza, a seven and half year old child of grade three of The Kindergarten Starters, Dubai.

As a part of the programme, Brent delivered a speech to the children from grades one to seven. In his speech he highlighted how to protect their moms from breast cancer.

Currently, breast cancer is one of the dangerous diseases among the women which causes not only death but also the loss of the mother to the children. It is a kind of tumor that develops in the person's breast. The statistical data shows that it kills around 4,00,000 women around the world every year.

"Protect Your Mom a breast cancer awareness campaign was founded by an eminent Indian lady, Premi Mathew based in Dubai a few years ago. Now, the campaign is moving to many countries. It brings awareness among children to do something for our dear moms. Self examination of five minutes can help find lumps. If a lump is detected early, an early treatment can be done and they can live healthy lives for long," Brent said in his speech.

He told the children to ask a simple question to their mothers, "Mom, do you know what is PYM?" and explain the mothers that a monthly self examination of just five minutes is all that it takes to detect the early lumps.

"Help your mom in her daily housework. This will give her some free time to take care of her health. Knock the doors of your neighbours and ask ' Do you know what is PYM?'," he added.

He also asked the chldren to send Mother's Day cards with best wishes from PYM Breast Cancer Awareness to their mothers as well as neighbourhood.

He added, "Make sure she vists her doctor for a yearly check-up."

In connection to this there was a procession by the children led by Brent to bring awareness among them.

The programme was concluded with slogans. Finally, Brent thanked Sr Irene Rodrigues, the headmistress of the school for giving him an opportunity to carry out the event. Brent was honored with a bouquet from the headmistress as a mark of appreciation for his efforts.

Congratulations Brent for such an inspiring and noble act. Many children of your age just enjoy their holidays playing and sleeping, but you are an inspiration to many with such super works and projects. Yes, Breast Cancer is a deadly reality which we have to take up seriously, or else it will be more than a epidemic which the world will struggle to deal with. Thanks for addressing the issue and taking it to India in a big way, where the people feel shy to express and react. We have to plan up such activities in Dubai too. God bless you and keep up the good work. You are surely an Angel of good deeds. Happy for you and your proud parents.
