Panaji, Aug 23: Violent mob attacked a police control van protesting against alleged assault by a sub-inspector on a pregnant woman, at Rawanfond locality, 40 kms south of Panaji on Tuesday night.
Police stated that the situation was later brought under control and police presence has been increased in the locality, which witnessed unexpected violence last night.
Locals alleged that a sub inspector, who was on his duty along with a constable, assaulted a pregnant woman, who was proceeding to the city with her husband. They said that sub inspector wanted to verify the licence and vehicle documents from her husband.
``Even after proper documents were shown, the sub inspector entered into an argument with the woman's husband and started hitting him. In the scuffle, the pregnant woman also got hit and fell on the ground which sparked off irate reaction from the nearby crowd which the sooon after blocked the road," alleged an eyewitness.
While sub inspector managed to flee from the site, the police control van, which had gone to pacify the mob was targeted and overturned on the road. Situation was brought under control only when police presence was increased.
"We are inquiring into the entire episode as we have received complaint from woman's husband in this regard," deputy superintendent of police Tony Fernandes stated.
