Udupi, Jul 22: Police personnel attached to Kaup station arrested two thieves operating in multiple states from near Pangala auto rickshaw stand near Kaup on Monday July 21. They said the thieves, who were armed with chilli powder and other weapons for carrying out such thefts, were lurking to execute another plan of theft at Pangala when they were nabbed.
The arrested persons have been identified as Muhammed Nasir (19) from Bantwal, and Eshan Ahmed (18) from Ullal Someshwar. Rifaaz from Asaigoli near Mangalore, who too was with the duo, got wind of the police action and escaped, it is learnt.
A Bajaj Platinum motor bike with registration No. KA 14 X 3333, and a Hero Honda Passion motor bike bearing two different registration numbers, KA20 S 868 and KA19 S 868, was recovered from their possession. The other Hero Honda motor bike recovered them bore the numbers, KA 20 S 5050. The policemen are now trying to contact the original owners of these motor bikes.
It is gathered that the thieves stayed in a hotel in Mangalore, and planned for their operations from there. The policemen have come to know that these thieves had stolen a scooter from Udyavar and had made theft attempt at Pangala post office. All the three motor bikes they possess were stolen from Mangalore, and these two-wheelers were used for their thefts, the policemen said.
Muhammed Nasir faces several cases in Vittal, Konaje, Pangala and Udyavar in Dakshina Kannada, apart from Honnavar, Karwar and Kasargod. The thieves used to spray chilli powder to immobilize owners of the two-wheelers or anyone else in case they tried to interfere with the thefts, policemen said.
The arrests were made by a police team led by Kaup crime intelligence department sub-inspector, Laxman Nayak, under the guidance of Kaup police circle inspector, Sunil Nayak and Kaup station house officer, Manjappa, under the directions of Karkala assistant superintendent of police Annamalai.
