Bangalore, Jul 10: The state government, buckling under constant parleys by the intelligentsia, is learnt to have agreed to go soft on two leading naxal leaders who were active in western ghats region in the past. The offers of surrender made by naxal leaders Sirimane Nagaraj and Noor Zulfikar, whose names appear in the most wanted list prepared by the police department, are likely to be approved by the government.
A decision in this connection was arrived at after a delegation comprising some leading personalities like Baragur Ramachandrapp, A K Subbaiah, Devanur Mahadeva, Indudhar Honnapur, Gouri Lankesh, Nagari Babayya, V S Sridhar, Parvathesh and Shivasundar handed over a petition on this issue to the government on Wednesday July 9.
The delegation pointed out that the two leaders have stayed away from naxal activities since 2006 and have expressed a desire to lead a normal life.
When the delegation met him, chief minister Siddaramaiah noted that the government had framed guidelines relating to the surrender of naxals and that facilities as approved therein would be extended if the concerned surrender as per a scheme specially formulated for this purpose.
He said that withdrawal cases pending in courts need the approval of the central government. He informed the delegation that he would recommend to the officials to seek the central government's opinion on this issue.
