Mangalore, Aug 2: When the government issued the voters ID cards for the first time couple of years back, names spelt wrongly, interchange of gender, wrong addresses etc were reported more often. Despite use of computers and other latest technology, why do such grievous mistakes take place?

To prove that ‘it happens only with the government’ is yet another instance of errors in printing work. Computerized printed ration cards to be issued by the Department of Food and Civil Supplies have been found to have numerous errors.

This was admitted by Rathnakar Naik, deputy director of the department at the quarterly Karnataka Development Programme review meeting held here on Tuesday, Aug 1.

Admitting that there have been mistakes in the cards printed, Naik said steps had been taken to make corrections before reissuing them to the beneficiaries.

Annoyed by this DK district minister in- charge B Nagaraj Shetty set a deadline of Aug 15 to distribute new ration cards. The distribution of cards should end by Aug 31, he instructed.

He also directed him to take note of the spate of complaints about discrepancies in the data printed on the ration cards and take steps to correct it.

Steps are being taken to make corrections before reissuing the cards to the beneficiaries, Naik justified.

During the meet, the Minister raised objection for diverting 3,000 tonnes of rice to Davangere district which was originally allotted to the Dakshina Kannada district. “The rice was diverted without bringing it to the notice of any people’s representatives,” he said.
