Udupi, Jul 6: Sunita Naik was elected the president of Udupi taluk panchayat and Ganesh Kumar the vice-president in the elections that took place here on Saturday July 5. Both Sunita and Ganesh are from BJP.
The president's post was reserved for the scheduled tribe community and the vice-president's post for the general category.
There were two nominees for the post of president - Umesh Naik from Congress and Sunita Naik from BJP, and two nominees for the vice-president's post - Ganesh Kumar from BJP and Shrikar Kanchan from Congress.
Both Sunita Naik and Ganesh Kumar won by a margin of five votes.
Kundapur assistant commissioner Yogesh Kumar was the election officer.
Eighteen Congress members and 23 BJP members cast their votes.
Former MLAs Raghupati Bhat and Lalaji R Mendon, ZP member Geetanjali Suvarna, BJP leader Mattar Ratnakar Hegde and others congratulated the winners.
Speaking to reporters later, Sunita Naik said that she aimed to develop Udupi taluk in a way that it wins an award. "During my tenure, I will give more importance to provision of drinking water, road development and building toilets in every school," she said.
