Udupi, Jul 31: The hutments eviction drive by Tenka Yermal gram panchayat at Admar near Padubidri here on Saturday July 29 failed owing to opposition by the dwellers.

There are more than 100 huts on the said land which is owned by Tenka Yermal GP. The panchayat had decided to open a fish market and veterinary hospital on this land.  A resolution in this regard too was passed in the panchayat meeting.

However, this decision was stayed by the court sometime ago.  But the stay was vacated a couple of days ago after the court hearing.  So the panchayat decided for the eviction of the hutments.

But on Saturday when the police, labourers, panchayat members including the president Sathish Salian and revenue officials went to the place to evict the dwellers, they faced stiff opposition from them.  The eviction drive failed since some of the local politicians stood by the dwellers.

Nevertheless, GP president Sathish later said that the panchayat is ready to find out suitable alternative to the genuine cases.  But he also said that right now even those who own their houses, have erected huts on the said place.  There is an allegation also that people from the neighbouring villages too have erected huts and encroached the land.
