Kasargod, Jul 1: Relating to the abduction and gang rape of a woman from West Bengal at Iritty in the state, the local court, coming to the conclusion that charges levelled against them have been proved, sentenced four accused to life term imprisonment, besides levying a fine of one lac rupees each.
It is said that a girl from Kabilpur in West Bengal, who was searching for her boy friend, had arrived in the district along with two male youngsters from West Bengal. She and her two friends were waiting for bus at the bus stop near Perumbady checkpost, when Biju, Mohammed Shariff, and Mohammed Sali from Ullikan, who were seated on a truck, stopped their truck and offered lift. They reportedly abducted the three, and abandoned the two men after assaulting them sometime later. The lady was then taken to Vayannur where she was raped by the three.
The fourth accused, I Jamsheer, who arrived at the spot later, also is said to have raped the lady. The accused had abandoned the girl and escaped from the scene later.
In the meanwhile, the youth who were victims of assault, filed a police complaint. The injured lady was provided treatment before being cared for in the government ladies hostel at Thiruvananthapuram. The policemen had succeeded in identifying and arresting the accused within a day from the date of registration of the case, and hearing in the court had begun on April 13 last year.
