Kundapur, Jul 1: A youth who was returning home after offering prayers at a mosque here was attacked by a group with a knife. The incident occurred at around 10.30 pm on Monday June 30 on the road leading to five cents Janata colony Doopadakatte Kandlur which has been considered as a communally sensitive area.
Yaseen (21), son of Munaf from five cents colony suffered deep gashes to his face in the attack reportedly involving people belonging to a community different from Yaseen's own.
Yaseen works in a footwears shop in the town. As holy month of Ramzan is under way, Yaseen had visited Mariam Binte Rasheet mosque in Kandlur along with some of his friends at about 9.15 pm. After offering prayers at the mosque, he came out by 10.15 pm.
As he received a phone call from Saudi Arabia at that time, he took the call on his mobile phone, and was slowly walking towards his home. His friends, who were walking faster, went ahead.
It is said that when he was walking on the road leading to Janata Colony at Doopadakatte, Manjunath Shetty from Halnad, Mohan from Ampar and two other strangers came in two motor bikes and stopped Yaseen. Two among them parked their motor bike, and one of them stabbed Yaseen's face.
Yaseen shouted for help, at which his friends, who were a little ahead, came back running. Sensing trouble, the two miscreants who had attacked Yaseen rode in their motor bike away. The other two, finding that there was trouble starting the engine of their motor bike, deserted their two-wheeler and took to their heels and disappeared among the thickets located behind Nethaji School in the region.
Injured Yaseen was admitted to the government hospital. Policemen from the local station came to the spot and confiscated the motor bike left behind by the miscreants. A case was registered in the station, and the personnel have launched an operation to nab the culprits.
It is said that Yaseen had nothing to do with the attackers, and he was not known to them.
It is however, said that Mohan from Ampar was named as an accused in a case of robbery of a jewellery store in Karkala which occurred sometime back. The policemen had arrested Mohan then, but the court had released him on bail.
Purpose behind this attack also could not immediately be ascertained.
