Mangalore, Jul 18: The bus shelter near State Bank area of the city and water tank in City Bus Stand are named after renowned trade union activists H Ramaiah Naik and Lokaiah Shetty to commemorate their contributions to the workers movement in the region.

A programme was held in the city on Monday to mark the occasion. Former Minister Amaranatha Shetty who inaugurated the programme hailed the contributions of the duo.

Being a veteran freedom fighter, Lokaiah Shetty also represented State Legislative Assembly from Surathkal constituency. Amaranth hailed Lokaiah as a matured parliamentarian and a person who voiced the aspirations of Coastal Karnataka region and problems faced by the workers in the assembly. Lokaiah enjoyed intimacy with former Chief Minister late Ramakrishna Hegde and was revered by the all, he said. “Ramaiah Naik was a person of great integrity and his commitment for the cause of workers and oppressed will serve as a model,” he stated.

The programme was organised by Dakshina Kannada Bus Workers’ Association. Corporator Sarala Karkera was present.
