Sullia, Jun 10: A youth had entered a rented room in which an employed unmarried woman was living at Guthigar near Subrahmanya in the early hours on Sunday June 8 and tried to rape her. It is learnt that the man had inserted a stick through the window of her room to open the door bolt and gain entry into the room.
The woman had woken up when the man tried to force himself upon her, and shouted for help besides pushing him hard. Reportedly, the man tried to intimidate her into submission by pressing her neck, but the woman struggled hard and raised alarm. The miscreant then made good his escape.
People from neighbouring houses gathered at the spot and made inquiries. Growing suspicious on a labourer named Lokesh from Arkalgud in Hassan district, who was working for a JCB stationed nearby, and who had shifted from the spot where he was originally sleeping with other colleagues, he was questioned. Dissatisfied by his evasive replies, the people handed him over to the personnel of Subrahmanya police station.
The woman came to the police station on Sunday morning, but dithered on the issue of registering a formal complaint because of adverse publicity she might get in the bargain, it is said. The suspected accused continues to be kept in the police station pending a final decision, it is said.
