Mangalore, Jun 1: "Vachana sahitya was inspired by life's struggle. It is the constitution of the humanity and is universally applicable," said Dr C Somashekar, the founder of Basava Vedike, Bangalore.
He added, "Vachanas composed by Basavanna, Akkamahadevi and others have transformed the society. The poets preached about the social and moral values in their writings. Basavanna has emphasised on equality of women."
He was addressing the audience during the third 'Akhila Bharatha Kannada Vachana Sahitya Matthu Samskrithi Samelana-2014' organized by the Jnanamandira Educational and Cultural Trust Academy at townhall here on Sunday June 1.
"Mercy is the basic essence of religion. Vachanas became the voice of the suppressed class," he said.
Chidananda Kamath who was the conference president and his wife were honoured.
After inaugurating the programme A Sadhananda Shetty, the president of Shridevi Educational Institution spoke about the vachanas and their contribution to society.
'Basavajyothi Award' was given to A Sadhananda Shetty, Hagari Majunath Rai Mumbai, Subbahaih A Shetty, Vidushi Rashmi Chidhanand and Seetharam Shetty Bannooru.
Dayanandapuri Mahaswamy of Gayathri Pita Hampi, Harikrishna Punarooru, G D Joshi, Mumbai and others were present.
Veeragase, chende and bharathanatyam were performed by artist.
