The site had many illegal residences where 'bachelors' and labourers working in the nearly satellite shops lived. The fire destroyed most of their belongings. Strong winds also helped spread the fire. One fireman broke his hand and another officer was injured due to the smoke and heat.

The fire raged for hours. Three fire teams from Hawalli, Mishref and Salmiya participated in fighting this huge blaze - led by Colonel Adil Shuabi and Colonel Ali Al Jarki. Also present were general director of the fire services department Brigadier Yousuf Al-Ansari and Colonel Ahmad Bu Fitheen, the director of the Hawally five department.
Fire-induced heart attack
A 60-year-old woman came home to find that firemen were surrounding her house, which consists of three bedrooms, a toilet and a kitchen on the first floor of a building in Sabahiya. When she saw that her house was on fire she fainted, fearing her children had died. Sources told the Kuwait Times that the fire was only in the yard of the house.
The woman was taken to Adan Hospital. However, she was later declared dead after suffering a heart attack. She was the sole provider for a family of two girls and one 16-year-old boy.
