Karkala, May 15: A newly- wed bride committed suicide in her parental house at Bobbarapalke in Palli Village, due to torture by her alcoholic husband.

The deceased has been identified as Jayashri (25), daughter of Padma Kulal. She was married to Ashok Kulal, an auto driver and a resident of Kanchinadka in Padubidri, on October 18 2013. It is said that 13 sovereigns of gold and cash was given as dowry.

Sources said that the couple were constantly fighting which began in the second month of marriage.

Ashok, who used to come home under the influence of alcohol used to force Jayashri demanding for more dowry. He also physically abused her frequently, about which she had complained to her parents.

Jayashri had problems with speech and hearing and the same was brought to Ashok's notice before the marriage. Sources said that Jayasri's defect was one of the main reasons for their broken marriage.
