Kolkata, Jun 28: While Rahul Mahajan case has raked up the issue of drug abuse in the national capital, cocaine and ecstasy also do the rounds at party circuits here, police officials reveal.
"Drugs like cocaine and ecstasy are taken on the sly in nightclubs, discotheques and at some clubs," a senior CID official here said.
"These drugs change hands among known circles and are mostly couriered from other metros and places like Goa and Siliguri, which is a transit point of drugs from Northeast, the official said on conditions of anonymity.
"Since these people are mostly well-off and procure the drugs for the use themselves and do not sell them, we cannot do anything unless it is brought to our notice," the official said.
The city also has joints where peddlers sell drugs to persons belonging to the lower economic strata of society, Deputy Commissioner, Detective Department (I) Gyanwant Singh told PTI.
"The places where we keep a watch and pick up peddlers from time to time are Sealdah, Muchipara, Bowbazar, New Market Park Circus, Topsia, Tangra. The stuff is mostly heroin or ganja," he said.
Asked about drug use at parties and clubs, Singh said "We will investigate if we get specific complaints. But so far, there have been no such cases in Kolkata." He said heroin was brought to the metropolis from places near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
