Mangalore, May 7: The Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing department of Laxmi Memorial College of Nursing, Mangalore, observed 'International day of midwives' by organizing state level conference in collaboration with society of midwives Karnataka chapter with the theme, 'Midwives : Changing the world one family at a time' on May 5 at the conference hall, A J HRC Kuntikana , Mangalore.
Sandhya D’ Almeida unveiled the theme for the day, Dr Judith Anjelitta Noronha associate dean, prof and HOD of Manipal College of Nursing and secretary of Karnataka chapter Somi, was the chief guest for the programme.
She stressed on the role and need of midwives in reducing maternal mortality and morbidity in India and reach the goal of MDG 4 & 5.
Dr Naveen Chandra R Nayak associate prof Department of OBG , AJIMS, Mangalore was the Guest of Honour, he highlighted the need of midwives in our society.
Ashritha P Shetty director,Laxmi Memorial Education Trust, Mangalore presided over the function. Dr Larissa Martha Sams, principal Laxmi Memorial College of Nursing spoke on the importance of the conferences in updating knowledge, skills and practice.
The sessions for the day were
1. Vertical birth/ water birth
2. Acess: Bridging the gap to improving care and outcomes for women and their families
3. Autonomy in midwifery care: To achive a better perinatal outcome, Hands of policy
4. Panel discussion on “Midwives : Changing the world one family at a time”
About 83 delegates from various colleges were present for the conference. The conference came to an end at 4:15pm with the National Anthem.
