Chikmagalur, Apr 27: The judge of the court of junior magistrate (first class) (JMFC), Koppa, handed over constable of Anti Naxal Force (ANF), Naveen Naik, accused in the shootout at Tanikodu check post, to the custody of the police personnel of the criminal investigation department (CID). Naik was produced in the residence of the judge by the CID police late night on Friday.
In all possibility, Naik will be produced in the JMFC court in N R Pura on Saturday April 26. Additional director general of police (internal security) of Karnataka State Reserve Police, Amarkumar Pandey, and deputy inspector general of police, CID, Soumendu Mukherjee, visited Sringeri police station on Friday and gathered information.
Speaking to reporters, Pandey insisted that CID will hold impartial inquiry into the Tanikodu shootout incident and that there is no scope for any doubt on this aspect. He said that the investigating team will be closely verifying all the evidences, before coming to a justifiable conclusion
He asked the members of the general public not to give importance to rumours and always extend cooperation in the matter of maintaining peace and communal harmony. He reminded that ANF has been set up for a specific purpose.
Chikmagalur district deputy commissioner, B S Shekharappa, to whom the responsibility of holding judicial inquiry into the said shootout incident has been entrusted, said that he would go through the sequence of events leading to the death of a person in this case, and that he would also look into the matter of whether the policemen had undertaken enough precautionary steps before deciding to use fire power.
