Kolar, Apr 24: The superintendent of police (SP) of Kolar district has been accused of meting out inhuman punishment to a sub inspector (SI) who is approaching retirement.
Ajay Hilori, the SP reportedly ordered SI Siddappa to walk in the scorching sun for three days on the parade ground. The punishment was for his failure in providing accurate information to the SP on a crime reported in his jurisdiction, sources said.
Left with no choice, the SI walked around the parade grounds spread over three acres in the scorching sun on Monday April 21.
Another official was assigned to supervise the punishment.
However, SP Ajay Hilori denied the allegations and said a police parade is held every Monday and Friday and the sub-inspector was simply doing the 'practice rounds'.
"I asked Siddappa to take charge of the command on Friday. When he told me that he hasn’t been practising, I told him to start doing so. When I was additional superintendent of police, I too did the same for a week," he told a newspaper.
He, however, agreed that Siddappa had failed to furnish the report on a crime, but added that the incident had nothing to do with it.
The locals who expressed shock at the incident said that this was an instance where police strength that should be used to protect the lives and property of the people was 'misused to appease the ego of an official'.
No action has been taken in the matter so far.
