Udupi: Devotee alleges caste discrimination at Sri Krishna Math

Daijiworld Media Network—Udupi

Udupi, Apr 20: A devotee alleged that she was subjected to caste-based discrimination (Pankti Bheda) for having food at Udupi Sri Krishna Math, recently. According to Vanitha Shetty she was asked to stop having lunch along with her Brahmin friends.

Karnataka Communal Harmony Forum symbolically protested against this in front of the SP’s office in Udupi. G Rajshekar, president of the Forum, addressed the gathering and said, “We have been seeing the system of Pankti Bheda all along. Such practices only apply to those other than Brahmins.  The Pankti Bheda is practiced everywhere, not just the rural area. The government must put an end to such tradition and through this, we are going to change our society.”

He also recalled the time when Mahatma Gandhi came to Udupi and asked that if people categorized as SC/ST had permission to enter the temple and if not, then he said he had no works there.

“There are many rural ‘gudis’ still have these practices. They are propagating caste discrimination in the name of tradition, religious practice, and cultural heritage. This is a challenge for the educated youth,” said Rajshekar. He also justified that he is not against rituals and is not denying traditions.

He further said that humans need not practice the caste system with which God doesn't
agree.

Nityananda Shetty, husband of Vanitha Shetty, urged for justice on behalf of his wife and sought equality in the society. “This is not the first instance, many such cases have occurred here . It is a matter of humiliation. She was disappointed that despite being a teacher she was treated badly,” he said.

G Rajshekar, D S Bengre and Paniraj appealed to the assistant SP and said they would approach higher authorities if action was not taken.

WHEN WE HAVE LOT OF BIG ISSUES TO SOLVE WITH UNITY BUT ALWAYS WE ARE SEARCHING FOR SILLY ISSUES WHICH WERE IN PRACTICE FOR LONG TIME AND POLITICIANS USE TO TAKE UNDUE ADVANTAGE OF DEVIDING THE SOCIETY.
ULTIMATELY THE SOCIETY IS GOING TO SUFFER IN THE HANDS OF POLY-TRICS.
SEE ALL KUMBHAKARNA'S SUDDENLY GOT UP FROM THE LONG SLEEP FOR PRESS CONFERENCE INSTEAD OF GOING TO TEMPLE AND TALK ABOUT THE ISSUE.

You seem to suggest that instead of giving press conference one should go to the temple and sort the issue. Please remember one Mr Shivaram went to Kukke temple with a an appeal to Temple authorities to stop the discriminatory practices, but he was badly beaten by Temple management henchmen. It may be a silly issue to you, but not to the lady who was humiliated in front of her Brahmin friends.

Lord krishna gave his darshan to low caste Kanaka das who was praying outside the temple. Why such kind of practices has to be followed then? When god doesnt discriminate why his followers do it?

Feeding of cows and brahmins is followed in temples established as per aagama shastra.

It is an age old tradition and not discrimination.

If traditions and shastras are not followed, it will not remain a temple, but will become a prayer hall or a bhajana Mandir.

These so called progressive people can not do any good to society, but are bent to spoil every Hindu institution in India.

There is pankthi bheda in Govt. Departments, Banks, business establishments etc. where Top officials and utives have seperate canteenes.

What hurts me more than this incident is reading some of the comments supporting the practice. these comments exhibit narrow mondedness not usually found in this part of india. Udupi temple has always been discriminating against non brahmins , even Shri Krishna could not tolerate this and turned around for Kanakadasa.

As a foreigner, as a 'non-brahmin' in the traditionalist sense, I suffered no discrimination in Krishna Math all the times I went there many years ago when these customs were a lot stricter than they are now. But then, I did not try to force myself into places, or to do things, that I knew were sacrosanct. To my mind it is only ignorant people trying to make a name and fame for themselves who create incidents like this.

Because I observed the customs I was treated with respect by all staff at the Matha, and especially by all the Swamijis in Udupi.

AAP must take up this teacher's case. AAP has very inclusive policy towards all. It believes that good quality education will bring about abolition caste system and reservation or pankiti bedha in one generation. I hope the representative of AAP of Udupi takes up the matter and does something to solve this menace.

If anybody has problems with the customs of a particular temple, they can ALWAYS go to another temple which doesn't have these traditions/restrictions. Nobody is stopping them. Why oppose the age old customs which the temple has been following. It is FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT to EAT along with FRIENDS in a PARTICULAR TEMPLE. If the changes in tradition is allowed everywhere, tomorrow somebody will protest, why a particular god is installed in the temple instead of his favorite god and so on. The demands will never stop.

@MK, USA.. The kind of mind set you hold it is good that you are no more living in India... BTW all supporters of traditions & customs should know that all these things are bound to change over the time how much ever sacrosanct, it may be, that is the law of the nature...you can delay it but can not stop it coming..

Very much pained to hear what happened to a woman ...that also a teacher. Are Brahmin students not sitting in the class when the same teacher teaches in the school. The caste system is the enemy of humanity and devides the society in total. Please do not wait for the government...it is we who should take the initiative and practice equality as while creating human beings as God did not create on any cast ot creed basis.

This word called 'discrimination' should be repleced by word'custom' of the temple which is prevelent since years.Non brahmins have no entry into the sanctum sanctorum of th people, others can not climb 'Ratha' during charriot pulling times, seperate dining hall for brahmins etc.,These type of cutoms or practices which look like discrimination are prevelent in other religion also.Krishna mutt is a private managed worshipping place and they have their own customs.Even in govt run(under Muzarai management) temples are having discrimination in customs which could have been soled by the state govt.More over present govt is run by AHINDA minded person who has hue and cry about Kukke temple,Sri Krishna temple Udupi. Now he may not be interested in creation of a cotravercy by implementing AHINDA policies. In Kerala which is communist influenced land and also called Gods own land, there is no entry for non hindus to Hindu temples even run by govt. There is clear writting about this in every temple entrance. In Puttur Mahalingeshwara temple during annual festival time, non hindus are not allowed to put up any stalls in the vacinity of the jathra. Is it not a discrumination. Why no action or issue was not flarred up as a issue of discrimination.

Reservation in the name of relegion and cast is also discrimintaion . our constituion does not recognise any cast or relegion so why reservation in the name of cast and relegion . relservation should be on the base of the needy ( poverty level).

Caste based discrimination prevails not only in Hindu's but in every community.Among muslims Shia & Sunni differs each other and they maintain certain restrictions with each other.Among christians caste based system still prevalent during marriage alliances.Upper caste is called Bamnache means originated from Brahmins and lower caste called Shudranche means originated from lower caste.Though church never entertains this practice and totally against it.But people are used to this system.Wise saying is one shall not pelt stone at other staying in glass houses.

Very very unfortunate and shame on us.We are talking about MISSION 20/20
of development and civilization, but fail to acknowledge our own brothers and sisters as human.Highly condemnable act and insult to the human race.I pray god to change their minds for those who think the action has religious sanctions.
