Mangalore, Jun 14: The Pandeshwar police led by inspector Venkatesh Prasanna on Tuesday June 13 night, arrested two persons at the service bus stand here and seized counterfeit currency worth Rs 20,000 from them.

The arrested have been identified as Mohammad Kunhi (35) and Mohammad Sharif (25), resident of Kanhagad in Kerala.  However, their accomplice Issac managed to flee the place before the police could arrest him.

The police seized 40 currency notes of Rs 500 face-value from the arrested.  The police also seized a cell phone and Rs 250.  The police later disclosed that the accused had come to the city to circulate the counterfeit currency.  But the police after receiving a sure tip-off managed to arrest them.

Operating from Dubai?

The initial investigation by Pandeshwar police reveled that linchpins of the counterfeit currency racket are settled in Dubai.  Mohammad Haji, a resident of Kerala and Puttumonu of Puttur who are working in Dubai are the key accused in the racket.  They have been sending counterfeit currency to India via Trivendrum airport in Kerala.

Mohammad Sharif, who was arrested on Tuesday night, is the son of Mohammad Haji.  Puttumonu's brother was arrested by Bunder police sometime ago in a similar case.

The Pandeshawar police have registered a case in this regard.
