Udupi, Jun 10: Fishing activities are slowly taking wings at the Malpe port after the monsoon tragedy that claimed the life of 6 fishermen.  Since the rains have receded, the fishermen are getting back to their trade to earn their livelihood.  Already 25% fishing boats have gone fishing.

Incessant rains coupled with heavy storms had forced the fishing community to stop fishing activities almost for a week.  Now that the rains have receded and the sea is normal, fishermen have got into their act after about a week.  The fishing activities will come to a standstill from June 15 for the next 55 days.

As reported earlier more 8 boats had sunk and 6 fishermen had met watery grave in the Sunday May 28 night tragedy.  Many more boats were partially damaged.  The total loss was estimated at Rs 15 crore.

Meanwhile the chief minister has directed the deputy commissioner to review the building of breakwater on the western side of the Kodi-Bengre estuary.  Union minister Oscar Fernandes is expected to visit the place in the morning after which deputy chief minister B S Yediyurappa too will visit the Malpe port in the afternoon.
