Mangalore, Mar 31: In a case of alleged dowry harassment, a woman was driven out of their home by her husband and his family within a year of her marriage. The incident occurred at Handelu in Moodbidri near here, and the police have registered a case against nine persons belonging to the family of the lady’s in-laws, including the woman’s husband.

The accused have been named in the complaint as Nazeer Hussain (husband), his father, H A Khader, mother, Bifathima, Khader’s sisters, Zubaida, Khateeja, Sauda Banu, Nazeer’s brothers-in-law, Ibrahim Ulayibettu, Sulaiman, and Basheer. All of them face charges under different sections of law pertaining to dowry harassment.
Abdul Khader from Kinnikambla here had married off his daughter to Nazeer Hussain residing near Handelu mosque, on July 4, 2013 at Kaikamba. Reportedly, at the time of marriage, dowry in the form of 65 sovereigns of gold, and a sum of Rs 3 lac in cash had been handed over to the groom as agreed. The boy, who was employed in a foreign country, is learnt to have stayed back in his native place after marriage instead of going back to work. He is accused of meting out torture to his wife constantly, pressurizing her to bring more dowry. He received full support in this act from his parents, sisters, and brother-in-law, it is said.
Angered by the fact that the woman did not heed to their demand for more dowry, she was driven out by her husband’s family on February 28 this year. The local police have booked her husband and eight others.
Main accused Nazeer Hussain, it is gathered, has absconded fearing police action. The police have begun detailed investigation into the case.
