Udupi, Mar 26: The district Congress committee on Wednesday March 26 held a party workers' convention at Royal Garden, Kalsanka here.
Addressing the gathering, union minister Oscar Fernandes said, "The mid-meal programme was initiated by Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi. They planned to provide meals not only to children but also to their families. The government has provided rice for the poor at Re 1 Congress has also fixed the daily wages at Rs 135 per day per person."
"This election is a game-changer. We have only one option before us and that is winning by a majority in the elections. Only then will it be possible to fulfil Gandhiji's dreams for the nation," he added.
Lok Sabha candidate Jayaprakash Hegde in his address said that a few students of Kuvempu University had requested him to set up a branch in Udupi and their wish was fufilled in no time.
"BJP always tries to find faults with the Congress. They cannot see the work done by the Congress," he added. He also countered the allegations from the opposition regarding areca ban and said that if any person or party has evidence, he is ready for an open discussion.
Listing out the development works during his tenure, he said gave imporatance to railway and tourism development and also got a Rs 45 crore grant for transport development.
"BJP does not know the importance of country boat fishermen. We have also resolved many problems related to coastal fishermen. There is a need to bring advanced technology into fisheries," he added.
District incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, minister Abhaychandra Jain, district Congress president Gopal Poojary, former minister B A Mohiddin, Vijaykumar, former MLA Gopal Bhandary, Motamma, Srinivas Chikmaglur and others were present.
