Mangalore, Mar 10: Due to frequent accidents, spinal cord injury has become common. In order to help in rehabilitation, the department of Physiotherapy, Father Muller Medical College organized a workshop on spinal cord injury rehabilitation here on March 10 at Knowledge Centre Hall, .
Dr C K Ballal, consultant neuro surgeon, Mangalore was the chief guest of the function. Dr Lisa Harvey, PhD. PT, University of Sydney was the guest of Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa, administrator, FMMC presided over the function.
The inaugural function commenced after the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries.
The chief guest while addressing the gathering said, “Spinal cord injury is the most catastrophic injury. It is the cost we pay for being Homo sapiens.” He further said, “In India we have people taking various kinds of risk at the work place. All this is done without any protection. Very little is thought about them. Spinal cord injury leaves them only with self pity and pity from others. In most of the major accidents the drugs, stem cell transplant do not bring any positive results.”
“Most of the time the earning member of the family becomes the victim of this devastating injury, it is not only him but the family also suffers with him. The physiotherapists have a tremendous role to play. It has been proved that constant activities and rehabilitation promotes recovery. We should also inform the patients about the recent developments and research conducted in this area,” he added.
He concluded by saying, “By making a difference in the life of such people you will not only help the patient but also their family.”
The guest of honour and the resource person for the day Dr Lisa Harvey said, “Physiotherapists have a huge role to play. With their skills and knowledge they can make an incredible difference in the life of the victim and also help him leave a quality life.”
The resource person covered topics on physiotherapy management, Contracture Management and other topics which will help the participants improve their knowledge and skills in this area.
