Karkal, Feb 6: A cleanliness drive was held on Wednesday, Feb 5 in Karkal with the joint participation of Rotary club and SVT educational institute on the eve of silver jubilee celebrations of Sri Venkatramana Women’s college.
The rally that started at Venkatramana Women’s College proceeded towards new bus stand as students shouted slogans regarding cleanliness and picked thrash thrown all over the road.
The students who distributed hand bills and said that cleanliness is necessary in order to keep the town clean, urged citizens and businessmen to follow it.
K P Shenoy, secretary of SVT educational institutes silver jubilee committee, Principal Mitraprabha Hegde, Roteract club president Ganesh Salian, Ganesh Mallya, NSS leaders Asha Suntumayer, Rajarajeshwari, Sumalatha, Roopavani, student leader Lavina Luslan D’ Souza and secretary Sushma Mallya were present.
Councilors of town municipal council had created ruckus in the council meeting across party lines complaining against the stink and threatening to complain about it to district administration.
As the officials at the council had ignored, the situation has continued. There are allegations that the SVT School is trying to gain credit for the cleanliness. The group of school children’s indulging in the movement has created embarrassment for the municipal council.
The team of employees of the municipal council, chief official Mabel D’ Souza, environment engineer Madan, health inspector Sundara Poojary, president Rehmat, vice president Shashikala Rane, standing committee president Vinnibold Mondonsa, councilors Akshaykumar, Giridhar Nayak and Mohammed Sharif joined in the movement and gave cause for discussions.
The students getting down on the road to pick thrash, has given rise to wide spread criticism.
