Kundapur, May 17: A medical doctor practicing in Koppa was attacked on Monday by his co-travellers on his way to Koppa.
The attempt to murder was foiled as the victim cried for help which brought people together to help him.
Dr Vijayendra Bhat (30) was assaulted by two persons. The doctor has sustained grievous wounds and has been admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore, while the accused are reported absconding.
Bhat is the second son of late Gururaj Bhat, who was an electrical engineer from Koteshwar. Bhat runs a clinic at Koppa and the above incident occurred on his return to Koppa from Koteshwar in his car, accompanied by his friends Srinath Adiga from Belve and Sadashiv Achar from Siddapur.
As soon as the car neared Madamakki, Srinath Adiga tightened a rope around Bhat’s neck. Sadashiv Achar assaulted Bhat with an iron rod. The doctor, shaken by the unexpected attack shouted for help. When the shopkeepers and others rushed to the car to help, the miscreants fled away.
A case of attempt to murder has been registered at Shankarnarayana Police station.
