'Gravity' leads BAFTA nominations pack


London, Jan 8 (IANS): Sci-fi thriller "Gravity" has received the maximum nominations with 11 nods, including best film, for the 2014 British Academy Film Awards (BAFA), organised by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

"Gravity", which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, is also nominated for outstanding British film, best director (Alfonso Cuarón), original screenplay, original music, cinematography, editing, production design, sound and special visual effects.

Bullock is nominated for leading actress, read a statement on the BAFTA official website Wednesday.

"12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" stand a chance to win with noiminations in ten categories for each.

"Captain Phillips" has nine nominations; "Behind the Candelabra" and "Saving Mr. Banks" each have five nominations; "Philomena", "Rush" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" have four nominations.

"Blue Jasmine", "The Great Gatsby", "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "Nebraska" have each been nominated three times; and "The Act of Killing", "The Butler" and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" have two nominations each.

Along with "Gravity", the competitors in the best film category are "12 Years A Slave", "American Hustle", "Captain Phillips" and "Philomena".

"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" is nominated for Outstanding British Film, alongside "Gravity", "Philomena", "Rush", "Saving Mr. Banks" and "The Selfish Giant".

The EE British Academy Film Awards will take place Feb 16 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden here. The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Fry.
