Udupi: Fire destroys five boats at Malpe, loss estimated at Rs 40 lac

Udupi, Dec 17: Four country boats and a small boat caught fire at Padukere, Malpe here on Tuesday December 17, causing a loss of around Rs 40 lac.
The boats were anchored on shore and and covered with tarpaulin as presently there is a ban on fishing by country boats.
It is said that the fire was sparked off due to short circuit in a transformer located close to the spot where the boats were anchored.
The flames spread quickly and the boats which were made of fibre were gutted in no time.
The boats belong to a group of 42 fishermen. The total loss is said to be around Rs 40 lac.
The locals who spotted the fire informed the fire brigade and officials. After some effort, the flames were doused by the fire personnel.
Members and leaders of fishermen associations as well as district officials visited the spot.
Malpe police have registered a case.
